Reflection

A sudden twist of our fate changed and narrowed down our topic of child abuse today. Mr. James came along with both an idea and something that would make everything a lot simpler. We decided to switch from domestic abuse to corporal punishment in schools.

Logically, this topic for our assignment would be so much easier to complete! Think about it, we do not need to consider where our documentary is directed at, parent or children. We probably don't even need to make our outcome so complicated!

Imagine that we can find an organization that supports us in our topic, that corporal punishment should be abolished. We can hopefully dig out an outcome, maybe with sponsored t-shirts or caps, or I don't know. All we have to do now is preserve, and research.

Reflection

Pressure and stress heaped on us as the weeks flew past us and silently we knew that sooner or later, the practical part of our project will have to be executed. For now all we had to do was plan on an outcome, and even that proved to be a nuisance.

Weeks of lessons have been ridiculously wasted on the pathetic yet necessary argument on what kind of outcome we should produce? how he outcome should look like? who should the outcome be directed towards? and what the outcome should consist of.

Funny as it seems that how this project can affect me. Indirectly saying, this thing has the power to screw up my social life, my personal life and my life. I understand that some people really love this subject and probably thought that this assignment is pure fun that directly relates to their Global Perspective grades.

Unfortunately for me I am not that type of a person.

I do not find happiness in investigating an issue in my society.

Too bad for me that it is something I must and should do.

Till then Maxwell, good luck and God bless.

Individual Reflection

The Group Work
  1. What have I contributed to the group project?
I am proud to say that I have lived up to my responsibilities and played my part our group project. I have researched, completed the work given, generate ideas when the team seemed most lost, while motivating and encouraging the teammates when everyone’s feeling down and finished. Contribution was the most important thing to me when I first joined this group. I knew that I had to start right and end right. I am also the team leader for other subjects, so I know how important individual participation is. I think it is fair to say that I have tried hard, but not the best. From the weeks of this mock project I have realized that interest is the key element in the efficiency of the work we produce and that was what we lacked the most, particularly me. I could feel the pressure on me as Stephanie urged me to get online to discuss about the project. Was I the only one feeling lazy and not bothered? Of course I have no right to judge my teammates but their constant slacking also pulls me downwards. They’ve tried hard and worked well, but what we lacked of was interest.

  2. What would I do differently next time?  Why?
Needless to say the group Peak Oil mock project was something we do not take much interest in. This made me realize that if we want to feel determined, if we wanted a driving force to make this sound important  to us, we will have to choose the right key topic. As much as I would hate to admit this, I did not contribute to the choice of key topic. All I did was vote. Maybe I should have thought of myself more individually, for my own good. I should have produce more choice of key topics to make me feel interested. The next time we do our real project, I will think hardly, and choose something worth spending time on.

  3. What have I learnt about working together?
Team work is so important, it is like a cure or medicine for cancer patients. Over the weeks I’ve realized that laziness is a disease that spreads from mate to mates. When one person is lazy, everyone would feel lazy. When one person’s interested, he or she will be the driving force, encouraging and pushing everyone to work as hard as her. Surely no one enjoys losing. With a competition to compete with, everyone would have to work their ass off. The word ‘TOGETHER’ itself means ToGetHer, or in other words a sense of determination to achieve something with someone.

  4. What has been good/challenging about working as part of a group?
The best part of working as a team is where you can point fingers at someone else to shake off the blame. Unfortunately for me this kind of attitude is unacceptable and irresponsible. When we make a mistake we take it as a team. The blame and consequences are spread among the members. However the bad part is when a member opposes your idea. Frustrating it is when someone says your idea’s useless or ridiculous. As I sat quietly doing my work, I overheard the other team quarreling, one of them even called the other’s plan as ‘pointless’. A tinge of sadness and frustration appeared on her face. Filled with toughness, she shook it off, and the other members just continued without even noticing or hinting her feelings. That my friend, is the worst part of a team.
What have I learnt doing the project?
  1. What have I learnt about;
    1. deciding on and planning a project?
The choice of topic affects the determination and interest in us.
    2. planning and producing research?
Laziness is a disease. Keep your mind focused, eyes on the prize.
    3. reading and presenting my ideas?
Do not be ashamed of what you have. If you had done your homework and played your part, there should be nothing to be afraid of.
    4. time management?
Well this is something I don’t have. Who am I to say? However a simple tip is that YOU MUST BE PUNCTUAL as this can either earn your trust with other members, or break them apart.

  2. What would you do differently to develop these skills?
I would have spend more time on my work and less time in procrastination. I’ll have to work particularly on my time management.

  3. How did I approach my individual contribution?
Like I said I played my part and my roles. I’ve contributed enough for the team. Not to say I’m flawless, but I am not afraid to say that I have contributed enough, but not the best.

  4. What are the most valuable points I have learnt?  Why?
During the weeks, I’ve learnt more about my teammates to be honest. I’ve learned their ways of handling problems, their characteristics, their strengths and their weaknesses.

The Mock Project Reflection

Group Evaluation
It is time to review your ‘mock’ project’ as a group.  You will need to discuss and answer these questions on your group wiki/blog/webpage.

The Project
1.     What area of study did you choose?  Why?
- Why are we looking for oil rather than alternatives oil?
- The topic sounded very interesting but yet again, we were too lazy to think of another topic to focus on.
2.     What did your groups hope to achieve?  What was your proposed outcome?
- Wanted to show awareness that peak oil is important to our lives.
- We wanted to create an advertisement and a documentary showing why people were not looking for alternatives rather than digging for more oil and how disastrous this issue can be to the society.
3.     How could you critically evaluate the success of your outcome?
- As a group, we can honestly say we did not create an outcome. So preferably speaking, the success of our outcome was a failure due to the fact we had lack of information, concentration and interest in the topic.
4.     What were your specific group roles and responsibilities?  How did you organise this?  Was the allocation effective?
- Stephanie's the leader when it comes to organization, whip cracking and giving out work as well as rewarding and encouraging us
- Adam's the leader when it came to the technical work and documents, what we should do, what we should add, how we should do it
- Maxwell's the leader when it comes to the times where everyone's feeling down, and when help is needed the most to raise the spirits of the young offsprings.
- The roles were quite vague due to the fact, yet again, we weren’t so interested into the topic, we didn’t give much thought about it. But then again, the roles were quite effective since we actually somewhat did work that we initially planned to do.

5.     Did your project have enough scope for every group member to play an active, full time part in the group work?  How could you improve this?
- Yes, we did have enough scope for every group member to play an active, full time part in the group work. There were so few members in the group, it might have had some disadvantages when it comes to the efficiency of our work. On the other hand, quoted by Maxwell, “it relaly magnifies our strength, weaknesses, and our determination as well as commitment.”
- We can improve this by doing our work more effectively, more commitment and better responsibilities for our own specific roles.

6.     Was the workload manageable in the time frame given?
- The workload was manageable in the time frame given.
- If we had been more hardworking, took more initiatives, and to focus more occasionally rather than slacking around, then yes.

7.     How effective were your minutes and agendas?  How did they help you?  How could you improve them?
- The agenda shows us what we’ve been doing over the weeks to indicate how hard we’ve been working, as hard as before, or even harder. It is sort of like a journal that allows us to keep track with the activities we’ve done.
- We’ve created one minute throughout the whole project. The minute was posted up on Stephanie’s bog and it was helpful because we occasionally look back to that post and see on what we had to work on.
- So far, we have updated our agendas according to every single meeting so there is not much improvement for this.

The Perspectives
1.     How did you gather information and opinions/viewpoints from a personal, national/local and global perspective?
- We gathered all the information through research.

2.     How did/ could you ensure you consider all these perspectives in your project?
- create a checklist and check it often so we know what we have to accomplish before the deadline.

3.     Would your outcome need to be accompanied by some additional explanation or elaboration?
- Preferably not. Because we would be stating almost everything into the documentary and advertisement. If we add more information, we might confuse the audience even further.

4.     How could you make sure you include cross-cultural views?
- Ask opinions (surveys) around the school who are foreigners.
- Get in contact with schools in foreign countries.

GROUP STORY

In this life-changing yet intriguing mock group project, our Global Perspective teachers set us a certain area of study, which was a project relating to Peak Oil. With that Adam, Stephanie and Maxwell were all set to face the difficult challenges we were about to encounter. Although we went as determine learners, we were finished off with disasters and tragedies’ inflicted upon us. At first, there were four of us, including Hong Yi. Very much unfortunate for us Hong Yi had to join the learners’ aid for Global Perspective class, which will eventually train and prepare him for the challenges we were about to face. He wasn’t ready for this, and understandingly we agreed that the best way to love him is to set let him go, leaving us with a man down, someone less a limb, a Templar without his sword, a shark without it’s jaws. Hong Yi’s departure left us with a sour taste between our taste buds, but we all knew that not everything will go the way we wanted. We just had to bear with it.

The Peak Oil project seemed interestingly mind blogging to us when Ms. Gita, a living legend, first introduced it to us. It seemed like an issue that we will have to face someday, an issue that can be the end of us all. Peak oil is a time where the production of oil reaches it’s very peak, and can only reduce. It is a time where all of us have finally realized what we have now, what we use during our needless and overrated daily activities, what we most depend on, what brings us to school and made the world so much smaller, was finally coming to an end.

Of course every normal kid like the three of us would be very much bothered by the thought of ‘not using the Internet’ or ‘not being able to turn the air-conditioning on’. Who wouldn’t?

Henry Lawrence Gantt

Gantt Charts are a useful method to help someone get smart and get organized. Henry Lawrence Gantt was a genius when he discovered the bizarre chart in the 1920's. But by the time officials discovered that the Gantt Chart was the key to road systems, the simple tool became popular world wide. A Gantt Chart is basically a gridded scale with the x-axis labelled as timeline and the y-axis labelled as different types of jobs or roles. As time passes the jobs or roles changes thus showing the amount of work we've done and the amount of time we've spent on the work. Some jobs or roles may overlap as somethings can be done while waiting for another thing to complete.

For learners who have no sense of time management and planning such as I am, might find the Gantt Chart a useful tool in aiding their studies. Assignments and school projects such as Global Perspective group projects requires an extraordinary skill of time management and the Gantt Chart might just be your bible. You can assign roles for members, assign deadlines for certain jobs, and also get a few people individual work to do at the same time. If a Gantt Chart exists then there can be no excuse of forgetting, confusion, or any form of conflict in the work assigned for each people. The school provided us with a remarkable program called the "Gantt Project" and I think that it is fantastic for learning and management. With a few clicks you can predict when you're going to get things done.

Sometimes people just do not know how to use technology to its full potential, such as I do. Therefore I am here to throw a few tips you might just find useful to you:
  1. You can label every job or role in your Gantt Project, instead of looking for it on the right side of the page.
  2. Colour coding is another way to make labeling look simpler. Some people just enjoy colours. Unfortunately I'm colour-blind as hell.
  3. The Gantt Project timeline is infinite, you can make your Gantt Chart as long as you like.

Reflection 3

We started with a focus topic which was relatively broad and interesting, but ended up with a topic that was I quote from Ms. Gita "What my year 5 pupils do".

Picture a group of warriors that were well trained with a broad sword, but all they got was a crossbow which they do not know how it works. As much as I would hate to admit, we are such people.

All we do is work, and I have to admit are easily influenced.

I have observed other groups. Their group members are naturally well structured without them realizing. One such group has Jacelyn, who is ambitious, a natural whip cracker who wouldn't hesitate to tell someone off if they're not working hard enough.

I guess not everything goes as the way it is planned, nor hoped. We will have to stick together, as we are a group that works. Someone will have to take charge, and I will not hesitate to do so if the time suits. Right now every member's a leader.

Reflection 2

On the last GP lesson, we continued on our mock group project about peak oil. We started on our peak oil wiki, and basically wrote everything that is relevant down.

The only difference is that we had to finish the fishbone diagram. It's quite simple; write everything about peak oil from the national's, global's and future's perspective.

Yes we did allocate specific roles.

Yes we did work as a team, Hong Yi can barely speak English, so I had to translate everything to him.

Yes, we learnt how to help each other out in hard times.

We could've stuck to topic more. Because over time we seem to have drifted off topic and chat.

Group Project Reflection

Last week, we were told to start on the mock group project on 'Peak Oil'. We were asked to refer to all the links on Knowledge Net and jot down notes about every link on Peak Oil. My group decided to spread the work among ourselves.

I had to watch a video and to read an article. I think working together as a team is more efficient than working alone as an individual. If two heads are better than one, one definitely do not stand a chance against four.

Independent Project

What I found easy?

The easiest part of the whole project was choosing the title. I know what I'm interested in, therefore searching for inspiration for my independent project wouldn't be that hard.

What I Found Difficult

Everything but choosing the title. It's hard to find inspiration for my project. Initially, my project was based only on an essay. I wanted to do a video, but I was kind of stuck on what the I should include on the video.

What Problems Did I Encounter?

Apart from stepping on a couple of land mines, I encountered problems which involves the lack of foreign understanding about 1Malaysia. The difficult part is to structure my essay in a way where the examiner can understand the cultures and history of Malaysia. It's not easy to do so and it took me a few days to think about it. The fact that the foreign examiners know absolutely nothing about Malaysian political systems and laws made it worse. I have a limit of 2000 words in my essay. I had to use it wisely.

Traits

Trait 1: Plant
Trait 2: Resource Investigator
Trait 3: Team Worker / Monitor-evaluator

My previous prediction was that I would score higher as a Plant, someone who generates ideas. After completing the test, I scored highest on Plant, second comes Resource Investigator and third are Monitor evaluator or Team Worker.

Define: Human mind

Our sense of Judgement
Our sense of Conscience
Our sense of Imagination

Without any of these three sense of thinking in our mindsets we would never civilize and develop, unlike other living things such as animals who have animal instinct which are to survive and mate only. Humans are considered the more intelligent species that was created not because we have a more complicated brain nor born smarter. It is just that with our sense of judgement, we can can judge and have our own opinions on different things; with our sense of conscience, we can tell what is right and what it wrong; with our sense of imagination, we can develop ideas and make them useful to us in the future.

Reflection - Failure Leads to Bothering Thoughts

Law is something that ensures that the wronged are punished. Well thats what I thought it was all just about. After months of studying and digging deeper into this topic, we have gathered a lot of information from many different people; we have approached this topic by judging the death sentence from many different alternatives. Law and Criminality is such a vast topic, we could not cover everything in such a short time. I am sure that we would have covered many other things and gone deeper into this topic if we had just another month to continue this topic. However we did do so much, the teachers deserve a round of applause as they have tried so hard and sacrificed so much of hard work and time to make this topic an interesting topic. We visited the Palace of Justice, we had a lawyer come to our class to give a speech, we had members of the Amnesty International to give their speech, we had a mock trial on the death penalty; what more can we have? The experience we have obtained are precious and the opportunities we had are priceless.

What have I learned: Well before we started this topic I only knew how to judge something from my point of view; after this topic I have learned how to approach and judge something by looking at all alternatives and angles. This not only thought me how to approach something more maturely, but also showed me that not everyone feels the same way as you do. For example the view point on the death penalty might not be the same for a family members of the accused and the family members of the victim. The visit to the Palace of Justice thought me how the Malaysian Judiciary system works and the different types of courts and punishment it serves. The speech Mr. Ramesh made in class was terrific. I learned that roles lawyers play in court, the dressing code for lawyers, the rules and regulations a lawyer must abide, and how lawyers work independently on their judgements. Amnesty International gave an interesting speech which clashes entirely with my opinions on the death penalty, but it taught my how to look at something from both sides, all angles.

What skills did I use or develop in my learning: I have used the skill of judgement. Through out the mock trial we had to do tons of research and most of them are biased; we had to use our judgement to judge whether the information is biased or reliable. Through out the few months of learning this topic, I have developed my skill of evaluation. During the mock trial, we had to evaluate the the information and statistics we collected to the judge and jury. We not only had to evaluate but to convince the jury with our data. Overall, I think the mock trial has thought me a lot, the experience had sharpened and enhanced my skills.

What I found difficult: I find it difficult to come up with a conclusion with the information I have collected through out my research. The problem is that some websites feed us with pointless information which are nonsense. It is hard to determine which information is reliable and which are lies. For example I could not find the actual cost of executing someone and the actual price of sentencing someone to life. I also found it hard to find a way to persuade the jury and contradict the opposition's arguments on the mock trial. As strong as our points, the opponents also posses good arguments and slaughtered our team in the end.

Failure Leads to Bothering Thoughts

It bother's my mind how badly I've failed. I was confused the whole way through the whole mock trial, all I was taught to do was to perform my part which is to cross examine the kindergarten teacher. So you can imagine the confusion and psychological breakdown I faced during the trial. I partly blame myself as well, being a person not usually exposed to such things.

Three things my team did well in the lead up to trial: I am not afraid to say that our preparation for the trial was fantastic; we had regular lunch time meeting, we sacrificed our after-school time practicing, every time we communicate with each other online we prepared for our case. Our Chief Prosecutors, who kept us organized, were fantastic. Everyone in the team was determined  to try their best for the team and no one questioned our commitment.

Three things my team did well on the day of the trial: We were well organized; we knew our part. Although most of us have not have any experience of a court hearing, we all tried our best. We were all listening and helping each other out, we passed notes to communicate. Although we faced a little technical difficulties, everyone in the team offered a hand. Overall I think we did really well on the day, eve though we lost. Most of the jury were already against the death penalty anyway, but we were judged by our performance. Honestly our performance were not as good as the other team, but I think we could have done better. In the end, the better team won.

What I did well before and during the trial: I am a cross examiner and my job is to research and interrogate the opponent's witness. I am not afraid to say that I have done my part well; I researched and learned from my father, who is very experienced in these things involving civil courts. During the trial I listened through out the whole court. Me and the other cross examiners in my team help each other out and passed notes around to help our chief prosecutors.Truthfully and honestly, I was really nervous when it was my turn to cross examine the opponent's witness, as I had no idea that the orphan was retarded, or is suffering brain cancer, or leukemia, or....

A target for a team: Preparation is the key for a great performance. We should have prepared more, more scripts and more commitment. Communication and understanding between team members are also important; without them we would not understand what is going on and what our roles are. Finally we need trust as a team. I'm not saying that we should trust everyone, but we should gain everyone's trust by showing them we are committed to our job and by trying our best in helping the team.

...Personal target...: Personal target?.. Haha, what personal target? I'm joking. I should have prepared more. Thats the only weakness I have. I delay and perform last minute work, I am easily distracted, I am a lazy person -.- and I trust the opponent too much. I fed information to the opponents and by that I destroyed the trust I had with the chief prosecutors. I will try to finish work as soon as possible next time (that does not mean I will simply finish my work).

In my opinion, this is a very exhausting topic. I am totally drained out after the mock trial. The only thing that I dream of every night is about the mock trial and Mr. Ramesh shouting at witnesses. However this is only my opinion, it might not be the same as yours...

12 Angry Men

A boy was suspected in the murder of his father. He is ordered to the court to attend the trial to determine whether he would face the death sentence. His fate lies beneath the hands of 12 jurors, and unfortunately for him, all of them were not taking him seriously; all except one. It was a hot Friday afternoon; no one was expected to work overtime and most of them have better things to do elsewhere. No one wanted to be there in the stuffy room, not even the fan was working. Everyone wanted to get over with it, so they made a quick voting of guilty or not guilty. Everyone voted guilty, except for one man. He was the only one who stand for his vote. No one was happy with the fact that he rebelled with the rest of the jury. He persuaded everyone of them that the boy is guilty, and one by one, the jurors were persuaded to join his side. The man has a natural talent in investigating cases such as these, and he put it into good use in persuading almost everyone to vote not guilty. However one stubborn man decided to protest against the good man's argument due to his own personal reasons. In the end, he submitted and admitted to his stubbornness and therefore agreed with the good man's argument.

I would give this movie a 4 out of 5. It has an interesting plot, and story. Although it may be a low budget movie, the story is well organized, and the actors played their part very well. The acting was fantastic; the emotion the actors showed, the dialogue. Unfortunately the movie was a bit of a low budget movie. The whole movie was only scened in one area: the room. In conclusion, the movie is not bad, despite it being a low budget movie.

Cyber Bullying - Nazar and Chong Wei (childish matters)

Nazar, a Grade 9 student, transferred to a new school halfway through the semester. He had trouble making friends until he discovered the school’s Facebook network. Most of the other students on Facebook responded to his “friend” requests and he soon began to feel more included, and made friends with some of them at school as well.

After a while, though, Nazar noticed that his friends list was shrinking as people removed him from their friends lists. He was puzzled by this at first until one of his offline friends told him that Chong Wei, a Grade 11 student, had gotten angry at Nazar because he had seen Nazar talking to Linda, Chong Wei’s ex-girlfriend. Chong Wei had begun to pressure everyone he knew to remove Nazar and Linda from their friends lists on Facebook, and to ignore them at school as well.

One afternoon in the Library, Nazar got more and more angry at Chong Wei and his friends. Since he had finished his work for the period, he decided to start aFacebook group called “Why I Hate Chong Wei,” and he invited everyone still on his friends list to join it. It turned out that there were quite a few people at the school who did not like Chong Wei and his friends, and Nazar’s group grew quickly. Whenever the message traffic on the group slowed, Nazar would try to boost it by posting some shocking accusation about Chong Wei, such as suggesting that he had cheated on Linda or that he had hit her when they were dating (Linda was not involved in the group, and had never said any such thing).

Soon other members of the group started to make their own accusations and suggestions about Chong Wei, some even saying that Chong Wei should have water balloons thrown at him when he went up the main stairway. Nazar responded to that suggestion, saying rocks should be thrown instead.

After a few weeks, one of Chong Wei’s friends discovered the group and reported it to him. Chong Wei told his parents and they decided to report it to the principal and keep him out of school until things had been worked out, as well as to report what Nazar had done to the police.

In this case the perpetrator and the target would both me Nazar and Chong Wei. Both of them committed the offense and both of them are the victim. Chong Wei started it all by provoking Nazar, but in my opinion Nazar is the one to blame in this because he produced false accusation to the public about Chong Wei. Chong Wei only sparked hatred on Nazar internally in school but Nazar spread the false accusations about Chong Wei to the public.

In my opinion Chong Wei have applied the act of 'Excluding' to Nazar in a form of cyber bullying. Chong Wei have pressured his peers to single out Nazar in order to leave him out or exclude him in society in school. Unfortunately, Nazar had used a worse form of cyber bullying against Chong Wei, which is 'Insulting'. Nazar have provided false accusations about Chong Wei abusing his ex-girlfriend. This could lead damaging his reputation or cause him to be condemned by the public. This can lead into misinterpretation in the public as well.

As a police officer, I would follow my instinct, and throw Nazar into jail instead of Chong Wei. Chong Wei's form of cyber bullying is intended to single out Nazar, but Nazar's form of cyber bullying is intended to insult or damage Chong Wei's reputation. However both cases should not go unnoticed, as both Nazar's and Chong Wei's parents should be informed about this occasion. I personally think this occurrence is just a childish matter and could be easily avoided.

Read each of the scenarios below, and rate the seriousness of each one from 1 to 5, where:

1 = Totally acceptable and appropriate
2 = Possibly wrong, but no action needs to be taken
3 = Wrong, and school authorities or Internet service providers should take action
4 = Wrong, and civil action could be taken by the target or the target’s parents
5 = Wrong, and criminal charges should be pressed

For any scenario you rate as a 3, 4 or 5, think about who is responsible, who should take action and what action should be taken.

The disability of Maxwell- Selectivity perception

Selectivity of perception
  1.  A child dying in poverty as seen by a doctor, economist, a social worker, the child’s father.
  •  Doctor (Nicole) : Inabilit  for medical aid to reach poor people
  • Social worker (Kai Song): We should help those who do not have the ability to support their child/ family.  We are responsible to bring them up maybe in orphanages.
  • Economist (Maxwell) : Economic gap is getting bigger and this is not a healthy thing for a society.  We should try to find out ways to improve the social and living condition, by providing mor job opportunities
  • Child's father (Bryan): I think that it is very sad o see my child dying in front of my eyes but I really do not have the ability to provide him with what he is entitled to. I felt sorry but I too hope that there will be aid from the society to help the poors.
  1. A sunset as seen by a religious figure, a physicist, an artist, a farmer
  • Religious figure (Bryan): Nothing is eternal.  Everyone will die one day, no matter how healthy you are, how wealthy you are.  Like the sun, it will set one day.  Pray, listen to God, and you will have a wonderful life after death.
  • Artist (Nicole): This is a perfect opportunity for me to express the beauty of nature
  • Physicist (Kai Song):  *Cough* Listen carefully, this is caused by the earth rotating around the axis.  Issac Newton has discovered gravity.... bla bla bla bla bla
  • Farmer (Maxwell) : End of a day, I can finally go home, what a hard day! Nicole, my wife will not kill me as I have brought sawi home.  And finally, my vegetables can rest from photosynthesis.
  1.  A tree as seen by a biologist, a logger, an environmentalist, a native from Sarawak.
  • Logger (Nicole): The forest is a gold mine.  *sings* "Money money money, must be funny int eh rich man's world"
  • A biologist (Bryan): To the logger, please stop cutting down tress as they lock up carbon dioxide.  Without tress, there will be a rise in the earth's temperature..... *Continues for 30 minutes lecture*
  • An environmentalist (Maxwell): Agree with the biologist. We borrowed nature from God and we owed it from the future generation.
  • A native from Sarawak (Kai Song): See, now I can't go and use my sumpit due to the lack of forests.  Loggers, please go away, I am gonna ask my cannibal friends to eat your brains.

Consequences of Sentencing Someone to Death

FOR DEATH SENTENCE

Of course, who would not want a quicker way to dispose of a murderer? It is both a cheap and an entertaining way to watch you're enemy slowly die. Just imagine yourself as a parent, one day you come home from work and you spotted your neighbor eating your children alive. How would you feel? Would you want him to face the worst consequences ever? Would you ever want to see his face again? After what you have experience, the trauma, the psychological disturbance, the mental breakdown issues, I THINK NOT! It would be great to watch your worst nightmare slowly die hanging on a noose, trust me.

Of course I'm not saying that the only reason why the death sentence have not yet been abolished is because of retribution from the victim; there are other reasons as well, both economical and political. Some of the reasons are listed bellow: -

  1. It would be costly to keep a criminal alive instead of just throwing him 6 feet underground.
  2. It might cause a stir and people would probably going on strike if the government lets an infamous criminal loose in the public.
  3. The crime rate which are punishable by death sentence would probably shoot up dramatically.

AGAINST DEATH SENTENCE

I once had a close friend, who was accused of 3 counts of murder and 4 counts of rape. He was then found guilty and prosecuted, that means he will have to face the death penalty. Eight miserable years later he was hanged; an eye witness claimed that it took him 10 minutes to die, 7 inches of his tongue was hanging from his mouth. Five hours new evidence were submitted to the high court which proved that he was innocent!

Alright,
Jokes aside,
I was joking,
BUT!!
Amazingly
It happens
 all the time!
And it might happen to you one day!
How would you feel if your father suffers the same fate
like my poor friend who died for nothing?
For your information
My friend was only
aged 18 when the
prosecution was
read, his family
members were
crying, they
could not
believe
their
ears

Reasons why the death penalty should be abolished:

  1. The sentence is irreversible; meaning that mistakes in prosecution are unacceptable.
  2. Ethical issues; religious people believe that only God decide's whether to end your life or not.
  3. It is unnecessary; might as well just sentence him to life imprisonment than kill him, it doesn't make you any better than him.

What questions do I need to ask?

Who is Mahatma Gandhi to every Indian's around the world?
What offenses did Mahatma Gandhi commit?
Why did Mahatma Gandhi commit the crimes if he knew it was wrong?
When did Mahatma Gandhi became famous and finally showing the world what he was fighting for?
Where did Mahatma Gandhi die?
How did Mahatma Gandhi die?

Courts and Lawyers

During the visit to the Palace of Justice, I actually felt guilty and scared. I was afraid that the offenses I committed in my lifetime would be judged sometime in my lifetime. The size of the entrance of the Palace of Justice weakens the heart of the bravest men. I suddenly felt like I was in the movie "I Am Sam"; the part where the mentally ill Sean Paul walks into court to claim his daughter. So we went to the conference hall to watch a presentation. The presentation describes the different types of courts in Malaysia. Good questions were asked and I learned that people sentenced to execution would get a wish list before the the sentence was conduct. Later on we went to a real court to witness a civil court in action. The situation there was intense, involving a dead mother' children wanting to sue someone. It is confusing yet interesting; I could have swore I almost shouted out a comment to the judge (3 months jail term).

Ramesh Chandran is a lawyer. I am still shocked and surprised that he actually took the initiative to visit our school to give a presentation about lawyers. He left a good impression to the whole class, although he had a sore throat and had to breath every five words he spoke.

Baby Dumping- Heartless Parents and New Born Babies

The baby dumping offense has yet again found its way to be the most popular crime in Malaysia. I find crimes in Malaysia rather interesting and more violent. Violent crimes in other countries, especially European countries, have definitely a higher count rate comparing with Malaysia. But the thing is, victims in Malaysia are usually children or toddlers, and in this case, babies. Baby dumping in Malaysia
is so common, it has a higher count rate comparing with arm robberies.

The government has tried so much to help lower the crime rate of baby dumping, but all in vain. Baby dumping is still one of the commonest crimes committed in Malaysia. The minister of education have issued sex education as a compulsory subject and thought in every national school through out the country. Some religious departments even considered ridiculous ideas to lower the crime rate, some of them even considered banning the International Celebration: Valentine's Day. The PAS chief declared that Valentine's Day is one of the main cause of the high count rate of baby dumping.

Rate of seriousness in the following offenses that are punishable by law (descending order):
  1. Drink driving while under the influence of drugs
  2. Drink driving
  3. Shoplifting
  4. Breaking into a car
  5. Picking a fight
  6. Solvent abuse
  7. Shouting racist abuse
  8. Being sold alcohol at a bar whilst under the age limit
  9. Urinating against a wall
  10. Doing a paper round at the age of 11
Hopefully, everyone would agree and vote for my ratings as the best decision, unfortunately I was wrong. 'Kai Song The Great' disagreed with me that 'urinating against a wall' is not a serious offense, and decided to go against me. She claims that it might make the victim who witness it feel offended and witnessing it can be a 'traumatic experience'. Carlos, the guy who sides the winning side, decided to side along 'Kai Song The Great' because her argument was clearly overwhelming mine. Simran tagged along 'Kai Song The Great' mainly because she, too, was a girl.

MY POINT IS THAT rating offenses based on seriousness from your own perspective might be easy, but when you share it with someone else, it might not be as easy as you think. It might spark arguments, it might cause problems, and in the end, you will never get to please anyone because everyone' different.
